Episode 86

Cane Punk Chronicles - Tales of the Sunny Coast’s Punk Underground - Part One - DISRUPT YOUTH

This Episode sees the kick off of the long awaited Wastelands sub series / the Cane Punk Chronicles - Tales of The Sunny Coast Punk Underground - This week hear Mark-O-Mark talk about how and why he started the notorious hardcore/ street punk band Disrupt Youth.

Disrupt Youth played a perfect blend of HXC mixed with a snotty UK punk sound. Their songs lyrically talked about politics (such as the OJ Simpson BS) and about everyday social problems. Originating on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia where they slogged it out in the local scene before moving to Brisbane.

In Brisbane where they enjoyed a loyal following which resulted in Disrupt supporting such bands as The Misfits and Propagandhi. After releasing 2, 7 inches between 1996 -97, they released their debut album Look'n for Answers on October 10, 2000 on Beer City Records from the States. Disrupt disbanded at the end of 2000 and are currently on an extended break.

The origins of cane punk

The origins of cane punk is as murky and mysterious as the individual misfits, weirdos & kids that claimed the title and celebrated their individuality in the face a culture less, harsh, beige and often violent mainstream coastal mentality.

The world wide Punk movement of the late 70s and 80s traditionally had a particular urban flavour. Generally city kids feeling disconnected from the metro monstrosities that housed them, ignited a revolutionary fired music fashion and culture that screamed independence from the main stream.

The pre internerd punk kids of the late 80s early- 90s that happened to find their sorry asses in the culturally void rural region know as Queensland's Sunshine Coast, had a different yet no less lobotomising cultural challenge. These young coastal dwellers still shared the disconnectedness felt by the city kids, but their experience was compounded by the physical isolation that resulted in residing with in a rural community...lack of transport, employment, entertainment and opportunities to express themselves ....that and being surrounded by rednecks and footy boof heads.

So what did they do... lay down, conform and try to fit in?... Hell no. Much like their city cousins, they organised against bland oppression, they formed bands, made zines, organised punk shows, held markets, opened alternative shops and generally made a stand!!

So why's it called cane punk then I hear you ask... We'll curious reader, the primary industry on the Sunshine Coast (prior to its utter collapse in the late 90s) was sugar cane farming. Local cane punk folk law recalls a night in Woombye when the term was hurled as abuse at the punk kids during a violent altercation outside a gig between the punters and a bunch of drunk footy players that should have know better. We can only assume the taunt was based on the fact that a lot of the punk kids grew up on, in or around sugar cane. The sugar cane industry may have disappeared but the name stuck. So basically speaking the worlds' cities may be responsible for the invention of punk, but.....Sunshine Coast put the cane in it!!

Wastelands Radio Show - EP 78 - Rolling Vengeance

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 78

Rolling Vengeance

In this episode Adam and Mark talk about the 1987 Canuxploitation film about a truck driver that builds a special, eight-ton battle wagon to help get revenge against the rednecks who killed his family. Directed by Steven Hilliard Stern and starring Don Michael Paul and Ned Beatty. Rolling Vengeance.

A truck driver’s family is killed by a group of red necks. Unable to cope with his feelings of loss, helplessness and utter crap local law enforcement, he makes a decision we can all sympathise with. He builds a gigantic, flame-spouting tank with giant tires and proceeds to take revenge on those who have wronged him, as well as their vehicles and buildings.

The vehicle itself is impressive -- it's not just a pickup truck on huge tires, it's a wholly scrap-built "Mad Max" battlewagon. It carries a gigantic retractable drill/metal cutter on its front bumper, apparently scavenged from some gratuitously suggestive metal-rendering machinery.

He does, however, correct a few misconceptions: for example, no, he did not defile a sandwich he later fed to Matlock. The germ of truth in that story, Jones admits, is that he's not shy about discussing his preferred technique for copulating with bread loaves. it's a candid window into the life of one of the original punk rockers — and Jones is frank about the inherent irony of achieving fame as a band protesting everything that fame was supposed to mean.

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 59 - Never Too Young to Die

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 59.jpg

Episode 59

Never Too Young To Die

In this Episode Adam and Mark take on a lostener recommendation. Rik the Caffiend Slinger brought to their attention the kind of movie you just don't see anymore. A truly "so-bad-it's-good" flick that isn’t trying to be bad on purpose Starring John Stamos, Gene Simmons and Vanity . If you ever wondered what Uncle Jesse from Full House did before, all your questions will be answered here. This movie is so “awesome” it will change your life. - from 1986 - Never Too Young to Die (1986)

Never Too Young to Die is a 1986 American action-adventure comedy film directed by Gil Bettman. It stars John Stamos as Lance Stargrove, a young man who, with the help of secret agent Danja Deering (played by singer Vanity, also known as Denise Matthews) must avenge the death of his secret-agent father (George Lazenby) at the hands of evil  Velvet Von Ragnar (Gene Simmons) A top-secret Agent is murdered, so his estranged son, a high school gymnast, teams up with his dad's attractive female partner to stop the psychopathic hermaphroditic gang leader who killed him, and now plans a major terrorist attack.

DIRECTOR

  • Gil Bettman - Knight Rider (TV Series) (2 episodes) - A Nice, Indecent Little Town (1983) - Forget Me Not (1982)

CAST

  • John Stamos as Lance Stargrove uncle Jesse full house

  • Vanity as Danja Deering Friday the 13th: The Series (TV Series) 1989 / Action Jackson 1988

  • Gene Simmons as Carruthers, Velvet Von Ragnar, KISS

  • Robert Englund as Riley, Fred Krueger

  • George Lazenby as Drew Stargrove, On Her Majesty's Secret Service
James Bond 1969, /  The Man from Hong Kong Jack Wilton, 1975

  • Peter Kwong as Cliff Big Trouble in Little China Rain (1986) / The Golden Child Tommy Tong (1986) / Gleaming the Cube Bobby Nguyen (1989)

  • John Anderson as Arliss - Psycho California Charlie (1960) /  MacGyver (TV Series) Harry Jackson

FACTOIDS

  • In a retrospective assessment of the film, Stamos has stated: "It's the perfect midnight-movie, where people can come and dress up. It's — what's the term I'm looking for? — the best worst thing you will ever see"

  • The movie was intended as the starting point for a "Son of Bond"-type franchise. It not only flopped at the box-office, but was shunned by its own co-star, Gene Simmons. Years later, when a fan recognized him as "Velvet Von Ragnar", Simmons exclaimed "Don't tell me you SAW that thing!"

  • Velvet Von Ragner's band in the club scene was made up of actual trans performers who gave Gene Simmons pointers on how to play Ragner.

  • The costume Gene Simmons wears for his nightclub act, is actually the same costume that Lynda Carter wore for her 1980 television special ENCORE!, in which she tried to look like a member of the band KISS while singing "I Was Made for Loving You".

  • The intersex angle was a later addition to the script.

  • Whenever a fan compliments Gene Simmons on this movie, he's been known to respond, "You are too kind. I sucked in that movie."

  • John Stamos took gymnastic lessons for his role as Lance Stargrove.

  • Shot in 35 days.

  • Some of the lyrics from Simmons' nightclub act scene would later show up in "Spit," a song from the 1992 Kiss album "Revenge."

  • Gene Simmons had to shave and wax his chest for his role as Velvet Von Ragner.

  • This movie was stuck in obscurity for at least 20 years and VHS copies were very hard to find. In 2017, Shout! Factory bought the rights to it and gave it new life, releasing it on Blu-ray and Prime Video.

Snack-Size Episode 57

Thundarr the Barbarian

In this snack size episode, Adam and Mark travel to a future where civilisation is cast into ruin when a runaway planet speeds between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction. where just one fights to spread peace throughout the land: He is Thundarr the Barbarian.

Thundarr the Barbarian series hit screens in 1980 from Ruby-Spears. The Production was very similar to the old Hanna-Barbera shows, but it wasn’t one. In fact Joe Ruby and Ken Spears were long time Hanna-Barbera writers of shows like Space GhostThe Herculoids, and Scooby-Doo. By 1979, the pair had branched off to create their own studio; their first series was the highly Scooby-derivative Fangface. They followed that with The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show and Heathcliff and Dingbat.

The premise for Thundarr is great :Civilization is cast into ruin when a runaway planet speeds between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction. Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn from the ashes with a savage landscape, strange creatures and a primitive sense of justice. But, one man fights to spread peace throughout the land:

Thundarr and his companions Ookla the Mok and sorceress Princess Ariel used their strength, courage and wits, plus Thundarr’s magical Sunsword, as they journeyed from village to village, liberating slaves and battling all kinds of beasts, mutants, wizards, thieves and robots.

Though the official story is that Mattel had been in development of the toy line that eventually became He Man and the Masters of the Universe since the mid-70s, there’s no denying, to my mind anyway, how much the 1983 Filmation TV series cribbed directly from Thundarr. Mattel began a comic book series prior to the cartoon…in 1981. Conan the Barbarian the movie is usually the agreed upon antecedent, but that movie came out in 1982, and there’s a lot more alien and technology in He-Man than in Conan. I’m just saying, it might be a mix.

In any case, Thundarr enjoyed only a 13 episode first season in 1980 and an 8 episode second season in 1981. 21 glorious episodes which mixed adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror into a strange mélange of magic. One of the few series of the era to attempt more complex storytelling than teenaged antics and talking dogs. And only just barely did it miss the window where action-adventure cartoons sold toys by the truckload.

Episode 56

The Toxic Crusaders

In this episode Adam and Mark revisit Tromaville and talk about the 1991 animated series and Toys aimed at children, loosely based on The Toxic Avenger films. It features Toxie, the lead character of the films leading a group of misfit superheroes who combat pollution - the Toxic Crusaders.

The Toxic Crusaders followed a trend of environmentally considerate cartoons and comics of the time, including Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Swamp Thing, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures. As this incarnation was aimed at children, Toxic Crusaders is considerably tamer than the edgy films it was based on (although it nevertheless contained many adult-oriented jokes that would go over most children's heads).

Thirteen episodes were produced and aired, with at least a few episodes airing as a "trial run" in Summer 1990 followed by the official debut on January 21, 1991.

Playmates Toys, the same company responsible for Ninja Turtles action figures, released a line of similarly styled Toxic Crusader figures in 1991. The majority of characters featured bright neon colours and glow-in-the-dark accessories. TV commercials for the figures used the tag line "They're gross, but they still get girls!" A total of nine characters as well as some rather unorthodox vehicles saw toy shelves. Similar to the Ninja Turtles' Retro mutagen Ooze, Playmates also marketed a canister of slime labeled Toxie's Toxic Waste. A toy line principally conceived by Aaronian and the design team at Troma and Pangea Corporation, some of the toys came packed with "Toxic Tips," which instructed kids how to make messes in their homes and otherwise muck up the environment.

In 2020 Super 7 released a 7 inches tall Toxie, modelled on the original Playmates figure from the classic animated series , its features multiple points of articulation, and includes a wide selection of accessories including a glow in the dark blobby.

Vintage Toys - Viewmaster

In this snack size episode, Adam and Mark take a look at a time when your little red viewer was the way to not only relive your favourite movies and tv shows, but to also see the world. The magical world of the View-Master.

View-Master is the trademark name of a line of special-format stereoscopes and corresponding View-Master "reels", which are thin cardboard disks containing seven stereoscopic 3-D pairs of small transparent colour photographs on film.

The View-Master system was introduced in 1939, four years after the advent of Kodachrome colour film made the use of small, high-quality photographic colour images practical. Tourist attraction and travel views predominated in View-Master's early lists of reels, most of which were meant to be of interest to users of all ages. In the 80s View-Master reels were directly aimed for children with reels featuring all the popular kids franchises like - Cabbage Patch Kids, Disney, Star Wars, Masters of the Universe, Transformers, Jem, Hanna Barbera Care Bears just to name a few.
