Lemmy was not only one of the founders of heavy metal, he was well known for his hard-living lifestyle, his a large collection of WW2 and Nazi memorabilia. And in latter years, holding up the bar and playing the fruits at the Rainbow Room on Sunset. What a damn fine man and roll model to many a misfit. and now he has been for ever embodied in toy form…..ironic but cool.

Episode 66

Motörmonth - Bömber

In this episode Adam and Mark talk about the Motörhead track "Bomber" recorded and released in 1979. It is the title track to their album Bomber and was released as a single peaking at 34 on the UK single charts.

The single was released in the UK by Bronze Records as a 7-inch vinyl single with the first 20,000 copies pressed in blue vinyl and thereafter in black. The band promoted its release with an appearance on the BBC TV show Top of the Pops on 3 December.

By 1979, Motörhead had been together for four years and had amassed a loyal following in both punk and heavy metal circles. After recording an album for United Artists that the label shelved, the band released its eponymous debut LP in 1977, but it was with 1979's Overkill that the band hit their stride. The title track landed in the UK Top 40 and, after appearing again on Top of the Pops, the band returned to the studio that summer with legendary producer Jimmy Miller to record an album that would become Bomber.

Adrian Chesterman illustrated the album cover depicts Lemmy, 'Fast' Eddie Clarke and a bug-eyed Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor bearing down from the gunner cockpits of a Heinkel bomber in the Blitz. Fascinated by military regalia, Lemmy insisted the plane be German because: "The bad guys make all the best shit".

Chesterman explains: "I suggested the Heinkel plane. They wanted this photo-realistic effect, so I designed the thing with the detached bomb coming towards you. On a weird side mote mark and adam both made the observation that the bullets that Lemmy‘s ashes were placed in and given to his closest friends bare a striking resemblance to the bomb on the cover of the Bomber single.

On 13 April 2019, Motörhead re-released the original single of Bomber for the first time since 1979, along with the single edit of Overkill on picture disc as a celebration of the albums 40th anniversaries on Record Store Day.

The song became a staple of the band's live set, with live versions being released on the albums No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, Everything Louder than Everyone Else, Live at Brixton Academy, Better Motörhead than Dead: Live at Hammersmith, and Clean Your Clock; and on the video releases The Birthday Party, 25 & Alive Boneshaker and The Best of Motörhead.

Motörmonth - Mark-ö-Mark takeover - Motörhead’s first 7” release

In this episode Mark takes over for his first MARK-ö-MARK take over episode!

This is a short one about Motörhead’s first single from their first album. Released in March 1977 in the UK on Chiswick Records it is not only significant for being the first Motörhead single, it is also the first single to ever be released on 7” & 12” vinyl format simultaneously.

The single failed to chart but we don’t care. It’s a glorious greasy garage gem and the B-side City Kids is an unvarnished slice of garage rock. Check out the links below to listen and learn about this iconic single.
