Ep. 126 - Trick or Treat Revisited

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show exploring the vast undiscovered cultural wastelands as a creative pursuit. Hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O -Mark, pondering punk oddities, trashy treasures, street levelness, life, culture and stuff.

Episode 126

.Trick or Treat Revisited

In this episode Adam and Mark turn their attention back to the 1986 Metalsploitation masterpiece – Trick or Treat. Starring Skippy of Family Ties and featuring special guest appearances by rock superstars Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne and a dynamic heavy metal soundtrack by Fastway. Listen in as they explain why they believe Trick or Treat a metal horror classic.

A semi-outcast high school kid and metal head Eddie Weinbauer (Marc Price - Family Ties -Skippy) is bullied by the popular crowd and is compelled to get revenge. After the death of his heavy metal idol Sammi Curr (Tony Fields- former Solid Gold Dancer) a devastated Eddie, discovers he can enlists the aid of the dead satanic rock star, through the backmasking a demo of Curr's unleased album. But as Hallowe'en night approaches shit gets outta hand and Eddie is the only one that can stop Sammi from making a satanic comeback from beyond the grave. A coming-of-age metalsploitation flick that mixes elements of "Christine" (1983), "Carrie" (1976) and the first Nightmare on elm street movies, but it strangely never attained the popularity of those films, which still doesn’t explains why there was never a sequel.

Trick Or Treat is a fine example of Hollywood jumping on the "backwards messages in metal music" bandwagon that Tipper Gore and her Washington Wives kick-started the satanic panic in the mid-'80.

This is a great movie if viewed in the proper context - It was meant to be a parody of teen-horror-devil-worship movies (and the '80s saw plenty of them) it is a particular stand out in the metalsploitation genre as it has great cameos by Gene Simmons and Ozzy.

Highlights

  • All songs in the movie are performed by the band "Fastway" which was formed by - Motorhead Guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke, and bassist Pete Way, formerly of UFO.and current "Flogging Molly" vocalist Dave King.

  • Features - A brief clip with Ozzy Osbourne as Rev. Aaron Gilstrom which he adlibbed also appears after the end credits.

  • Gene Simmons has a cameo as the radio DJ, Nuke. He did so as a way to pay tribute to his idol Wolfman Jack. He actually passed on playing the role of Sammi Curr.

  • The hellhound Skeezix was made by FX guru Kevin Yagher who also worked on Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) and Chucky in the "Child's Play" films

  • Directed by Charles Martin Smith, most know as an actor in American Graffiti and The Untouchables – but also directed Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997) Air Bud (1997)

Ep. 121 - Brain Damage

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 121

Brain Damage

In this episode, Adam and Mark talk about a low budget exploitation film from 1988 about a parasitic alien worm that injects it’s hosts with addictive hallucinatory blue juice and feeds on human brains, but has a deeper philosophical meaning - It’s the classic from Frank Henenlotter (creator and director of Basketcase) BRAIN DAMAGE.

One night, Brian (Rick Hearst) comes in contact with a goofy, slimy, blue, snakelike monster called Aylmer who secretes a mysterious blue fluid from a tentacle that protrudes out of his mouth. Aylmer uses the tentacle to put blue fluid into Brian’s brain which causes extreme euphoria and psychedelic visions.Seems like a pretty good deal for Brian until it is revealed that to continue to get the highly addictive blue stuff, Alymer needs to eat brains, human brains.

THERE IS SO MUCH RIDICULOUS STUFF IN THIS FILM THAT IT’S HARD TO DISCUSS IT WITHOUT SPOILING SOME OF THE BEST PARTS. but If you’re looking for a classic 80’s exploitation horror flick, that is actually deeper than it first appears, then look no further than Brain Damage, now streaming for free on Tubi.

Episode 119

Long Knife - Curb Stomp Earth

In this week episode, Adam and Mark take a look at the third release from one of the most depraved Portland hardcore bands ever Curb Stomp Earth from LONG KNIFE.

Long Knife has channeled and perfected the POISON IDEA sound, though if you pay attention to their catalog, you can see how they have evolved into their own beast over the years.

Oran O’Beirne from Overdrive.ie sums this release up perfectly - “From the majestic opening track, ‘Modern Fatigue‘ to ‘Uncle Phil‘ and the utterly face-ripping ‘Scum‘, which sounds like a soundtrack to anything from the Troma movie catalogue [’80s Video nasty fans will get the reference], Long Knife just bring it super fucking hard for every track on the album”.

Each record comes in a deluxe package - thick jacket, printed inner sleeve and a huge poster plus cover art by Alina Radetsky. - Released September 13, 2022

Ep. 117 - Punk and Disorderly Vol. 3

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 117

Punk and Disorderly Vol. 3

In this episode Adam And Mark finish up on the final record in the seminal UK82 compilation series - Punk And Disorderly III – The Final Solution.

While there was a political thread running through the previous releases here it becomes finely honed and sets the ruling elite firmly in its sights. Released in 1983 and at the height of a biting recession The Final Solution is full of proletarian rage and tracks like ‘Give Us A Future’ (by One Way System) and the Newtown Neurotics’ ‘Kick Out The Tories’ are pretty self explanatory. However, for all its undiluted fury and indignation tracks like the Angelic Upstarts’ Woman In Disguise’ are full of melody and along with The Adicts’ ‘Viva La Revolution’ are stone cold terrace anthems that demands 1,000 voices sing along.

Punk And Disorderly III – The Final Solution tracklist

  1. Burn ‘Em Down – Abrasive Wheels

  2. Give Us A Future – One Way System

  3. Kick Out The Tories – Newtown Neurotics

Wastelands Radio Show - EP 116 - Punk and Disorderly Vol.2 - Further Charges

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 116

Punk and Disorderly Vol.2 - Further Charges

In this episode, Adam and Mark talk about the follow up compilation to Punk And Disorderly, Punk And Disorderly – Further Charges.

Only a mere six months after the first volume, Punk And Disorderly – Further Charges hit the streets in September ‘82 and kept the amphetamine buzz burning brightly. In a nice piece of continuity G.B.H. closed the first album and they opened the second with ‘Sick Boy’ which set the bar impossibly high. Along with Discharge they paved the way for American hardcore (and later thrash) and in 1982 ‘Sick Boy’ was far faster, and heavier, than 90% of what passed as metal. With a satisfying bass rumble One Way System come into view with the venomous ‘Stab The Judge’ while The Dark follow with ‘The Masque’ and inhabit the same kind of sonic space as early The Damned in that gothic/punk crossover way. Often touted as the next Clash, America’s Channel 3 prove that UK82 had global reach and deliver the furious ‘I’ve Got A Gun’.

All of the tracks included here were mainstays on the independent chart and were released (or self released) on small labels like Riot City, No Future and Secret and soon became hard to track down (even more so nowadays) which made these albums essential in collating all these key tracks in one collection. The second wave of punk was, by its rudimentary nature and raw aggression, viewed as something of a “boys club”. Well, Further Charges blows that notion out of the water with three choice cuts featuring female vocalists; The Expelled deliver the waking nightmare that is ‘Dreaming’ and Action Pact get righteous on ‘London Bouncers’. Opening the first disc, and closing the second album, Vice Squad do what they do best and unleash the musical bomb that is ‘Resurrection’.

Track List

  1. Sick Boy – G.B.H.

  2. Dreaming – The Expelled

  3. El Salvador – The Insane

  4. Stab The Judge – One Way System

  5. Gotta Get Out – Court Martial

  6. London Bouncers – Action Pact

  7. The Masque – The Dark

  8. Gangland – Violators

  9. I’ve Got A Gun – Channel 3

  10. Vicious Circle – Abrasive Wheels

  11. Fallen Hero – The Enemy

  12. Death To Humanity – Riot/Clone

  13. Hobby For A Day – The Wall

  14. More Than Fights – Disorder

In this episode, Adam and Mark talk about the first record in a series that is the perfect document of the UK82 punk movement. Featuring the cream from the second wave of punk the first of three compilations is explosive and forty years later, still hit the mark. Punk And Disorderly Vol. 1

The early ‘80s were a truly harsh time: mass unemployment, poverty, inner city riots and police brutality all conspired to make daily life a struggle. However, such conditions are fertile ground for great art and it was this era that the Punk And Disorderly albums succinctly documented. Wastelands Radio Show- EP 114 - Robocop: Dark Justice

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 113

Robocop: Dark Justice

In this episode Adam and Mark look at the little known made for Canadian telly 2001 Robocop movie Dark Justice.

Robocop stumbles across information uncovering an evil group of government officials that must be stopped.- Director Julian Grant given the budget constraints delivers an interesting first part in a four part series call Robocop Prime Directives, which includes Dark Justice, Meltdown, Resurrection and Crash & Burn. Dark Justice is an improvement on the 1994 TV series, going back to its more violent roots. Even with a made-for-TV look and very low budget, Robocop costume and practical effects are brought to the screen quite well. The villain Bone Machine's costume is a little over the top along with Richard Fitzpatrick's performance. The tone is a mixed bag like some dialogue and visuals effects.

There's the staple news reports and adverts synonyms with the films and it includes Murphy's (now older) son and working for OCP. Overall, while expanding the Robocop character despite some production short coming, Dark Justice is a fun watch thanks to the crazy storyline, cheese dialogue and some good performances.

Wastelands Radio Show - EP 112 - Dead End Drive In

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O-Mark, pondering punk oddities, b grade movies, and trashy treasures.

Episode 112

Dead End Drive In

In this weeks episode, Adam and Mark talk about the 1986 Australian exploitation dystopian action film directed by legend Brian Trenchard-Smith (the brains behind BMX Bandits, Turkey Shoot and The Man From Hong Kong) with a script loosely based on a short story by Peter Carey. Dead End Drive In.

Stuck delivering hot dogs in a Morris van, Jimmy ‘Crabs’ Rossini (Ned Manning) strives to emulate his tow-truck driver brother Frank (Wallabies loose head prop Ollie Hall). Driving an F100 wrapped in protective steel bars, Frank battles other towies and marauding looters for precious car parts in a society teetering toward social and economic collapse.

Crabs lusts after Frank’s beloved ’56 Chevrolet, and pilfers the immaculate two-door for a night of passion with teenage runaway Carmen (the late Natalie McCurry) at the Star Drive-In cinema.

Trouble starts when the Chev’s rear wheels are stolen, and escalates when Crabs discovers that two police officers are behind the theft. When confronted, sleazy proprietor Thompson (Peter Whitford) reveals that the cinema is actually a government-run prison camp for delinquent youth. Once trapped behind an electrified fence, they’re plied with junk food, drugs, exploitation movies and and degenerate new wave music from the likes of Hunters & Collectors, Kids In The Kitchen and Machinations .

Happy Halloween - Episode 109

Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun 4: In Space, Leprechaun 5: in the Hood.

In this episode, Adam and Mark celebrate Halloween by finishing up the their Leprechaun deep dive and talk about Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun in Space and Leprechaun in the hood. All in one episode!!!

Leprechaun 3 (1995)

Lep is Las Vegas bound, searching for gold

Instead of the anonymous North Dakota landscape, we have Lep indulging in the City of Sin, getting into all of the Vegas hijinks viewers can dream of. Lep is searching for his gold, but he’s also gambling, disrupting pawn shops, hypnotizing people, hanging out with murderous sex robots, giving people the finger, pretending to be a magician who saws people in half and infecting a dude with his green blood in a kinda Leprechaun werewolf thing. It’s a gloriously chaotic instalment,

watch it HERE on Tubi

Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)

What’s the next step after creating a masterwork like “Leprechaun 3”? Throw that sucker into space and create one of the most bizarre films ever conceptualised. Toeing the line between “unwatchable” and “brilliance,” “Leprechaun 4” ditches all continuity in favour of an experiment gone gloriously wrong, and destined to be celebrated in the canon of trash cinema. It’s essentially an “Aliens” ripoff with Lep as the baddie, toggling between stomach churning practical effects and brain-meltingly bad CGI. The spaceships look like windows 95 screensavers, its movie when Lep emerges from a man’s penis (off screen), the physics of which still baffle our brightest minds. During the journey in space, Lep is turned into a giant, a man’s face is flattened like a pizza, there’s space marines, an evil cyborg professor, a space princess and a lightsaber kill, there is no real “plot” to speak of: The insanity just washes over the screen. but it can’t be argued that “Leprechaun 4: In Space” elevates bad movies into an art form.

Watch it HERE on Tubi

Leprechaun 5: In The Hood (1995)

“Leprechaun in the Hood” is gonzo right from the start: Within five minutes Lep has killed a man with an Afro pick, and Ice-T retrieves a baseball bat from his oversized wig in order to defend himself. it keeps the energy of the movie chugging along as it once again threatens to get too serious. The main human story involves a rap trio trying to make it big, and while the actors doing what they can, it just dampens the more fun “what the fuck?” moments that happen whenever Lep steals the spotlight. Do we get to see Lep share a joint with Ice-T, create a zombie army, fight over a magic flute AND rap right before the end credits? Of course, and these batshit moments help to cement this film as one of the series’ best.
