Wastelands Idiot box - Demolition Man

In this episode Adam and Mark continue to pay homage to the idiot box Monday night movie. This week they caught the 1993 American science fiction action film directed by Marco Brambilla in his directorial debut - Demolition Man. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, and Nigel Hawthorne. Stallone is John Spartan, a risk-taking police officer, who has a reputation for causing destruction while carrying out his work. After a failed attempt to rescue hostages from evil crime lord Simon Phoenix, they are both sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in 1996.

Simon Phoenix, is revived for a parole hearing well into the 21st century. Revived into a society free from crime, Phoenix resumes his murderous rampage, and no one can stop him. John Spartan. In 2032, the former cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara have merged into peaceful, utopian San Angeles. Unable to stop him with their non-violent solutions, the police release Spartan to help recapture Phoenix. Now after 36 years, Spartan has to adapt himself to the future society he has no knowledge about.

The story makes allusions to works including Aldous Huxley's 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World, and HG Wells's The Sleeper Awakes. The film earned a worldwide total of $159 million, and was considered a successful film for Stallone.

Factoids

  • Wesley Snipes' kicks and punches sometimes look lurchy and awkward. Snipes is an accomplished black belt in real life, and his kicks and punches were so fast that they blurred on-camera. Hence the producers asked him to slow them down.

  • Sylvester Stallone wanted Simon Phoenix to be played by Jackie Chan. Chan declined, since Asian audiences don't like the idea of actors who have always played heroes suddenly playing evil characters.

  • Sandra Bullock replaced Lori Petty after a few days filming. Petty left due to creative differences.

  •  In Kuwait, the Arabic title was "Rambo The Destroyer". Since Rambo movies were very popular, the distributor thought associating Sylvester Stallone to Rambo in the title would sell more tickets.

Idiot Box- Double Impact

In this episode Adam and Mark pay homage to the idiot box Monday night movie. This week they caught the1991 American action film written and directed by Sheldon Lettich, and written, produced by and starring Jean-Claude van Damme in a dual role as Chad and Alex Wagner. The film marks Van Damme's third collaboration with director Sheldon Lettich (Bloodsport and Lionheart) and second collaboration with Bolo Yeung (the first being Bloodsport in 1988)

Alex and Chad are twins who are separated as babies when their parents are killed by a crime boss. Twenty-five years later, they join forces to exact revenge on the people who killed their family.

Van Damme was reportedly paid $600,000 for the movie. Wanting to breakaway from the martial arts movie genre he had become so popularly known for, he hoped playing the dual role of Chad/Alex would change his image and help him do just that. "[Alex] is violent and [Chad] is not, so audiences [will] see the contrast in my work." Prior to the films release, he had told the Los Angeles Times: "If I stay in martial arts pictures people will get tired of my films.

Director Sheldon Lettich co wrote the script with Van Damme. Inspiration was taken from Alexandre Dumas' The Corsican Brothers; an 1844 novella about twins separated at birth, who find each other in adulthood. Lettich later recalled the concept of Van Damme playing twins "was so successful that other producers wanted him to repeat it." (TimecopMaximum RiskReplicant) "Even though it meant a lot more work for Jean-Claude, he enjoyed the challenge of playing two distinctly different characters, showcasing a dark and a more light-hearted side in the same movie."
