Wastelands Idiot box - Demolition Man

In this episode Adam and Mark continue to pay homage to the idiot box Monday night movie. This week they caught the 1993 American science fiction action film directed by Marco Brambilla in his directorial debut - Demolition Man. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, and Nigel Hawthorne. Stallone is John Spartan, a risk-taking police officer, who has a reputation for causing destruction while carrying out his work. After a failed attempt to rescue hostages from evil crime lord Simon Phoenix, they are both sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in 1996.

Simon Phoenix, is revived for a parole hearing well into the 21st century. Revived into a society free from crime, Phoenix resumes his murderous rampage, and no one can stop him. John Spartan. In 2032, the former cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara have merged into peaceful, utopian San Angeles. Unable to stop him with their non-violent solutions, the police release Spartan to help recapture Phoenix. Now after 36 years, Spartan has to adapt himself to the future society he has no knowledge about.

The story makes allusions to works including Aldous Huxley's 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World, and HG Wells's The Sleeper Awakes. The film earned a worldwide total of $159 million, and was considered a successful film for Stallone.

Factoids

  • Wesley Snipes' kicks and punches sometimes look lurchy and awkward. Snipes is an accomplished black belt in real life, and his kicks and punches were so fast that they blurred on-camera. Hence the producers asked him to slow them down.

  • Sylvester Stallone wanted Simon Phoenix to be played by Jackie Chan. Chan declined, since Asian audiences don't like the idea of actors who have always played heroes suddenly playing evil characters.

  • Sandra Bullock replaced Lori Petty after a few days filming. Petty left due to creative differences.

  •  In Kuwait, the Arabic title was "Rambo The Destroyer". Since Rambo movies were very popular, the distributor thought associating Sylvester Stallone to Rambo in the title would sell more tickets.

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 27 - The Barbarians

Episode 27

The Barbarians

In this episode Adam and Mark dive back into the b-grade wormhole of Conan the barbarian inspired sword and sorcery flicks. This week adventure is the 1987 Cannon action comedy - The Barbarians. Directed by the infamous Robert Deodato who was responsible for Cannibal Holocaust in 1980.  Featuring David and Peter Paul as Twin barbarians. It's just like Conan but with two Conan's and everybody's favourite Hills have Eyes creep and wastelands favourite Michael Berryman as the appropriately named Dirt-master and George Eastman.

Twin barbarians seek revenge from the warlord who massacred their tribe and captured them when they were small children. It's completely campy and it doesn't take itself seriously for a moment. Starring former professional wrestling duo the Barbarian Brothers, these actors -- which is a loose description of what they are doing on screen -- look like they are having a ball filming, and it's hard not to share in the fun. It really is a must-see Italian exploitation flick.

Highlights no explanations given – you’ll just have to watch it – Bear creature, man cry, erection dragon and oily walnuts!
