Episode 107

Leprechaun

In this episode, Adam and Mark talk about a 1993 slasher flick where the main baddie is parts Freddy and Chucky, it’s chock full of the cringiest rhymes imaginable, confusing lore, poor acting, confusing continuity, slapdash look of the cheap sets and shaky camerawork, even with all this there’s a lot to love in this bonkers franchise - Leprechaun.

The slasher genre is full of freaks and weirdos, but none of them hits a spooky note like the Leprechaun. The mythical Irish monster, played with pizzazz for the bulk of the series by the iconic Warwick Davis, is the prefect combo of monster movie protagonist and meth head.

Unlike “Halloween” or “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” there’s no origin story in this franchise that can help anchor terrible sequels. In fact, the original film is stretching every dollar of its $1 million budget to the breaking point. The story, set in North Dakota (!), sees a transported Lep terrorising a small family, including a bunch of amateurish actors and one very-out-of-place 22 year old Jennifer Aniston in her first feature film appearance . Davis’ performance is well-orchestrated even in this first chapter, loaded with the iconic death-by-pogo-stick scene and a child screaming “Fuck you, Lucky Charms!”, this movie move with enough pace that it avoided a sentenced to a sequel-less life in the clearance bin.
